The short story A Possibility of Evil by Shirley Jackson takes place in a small town somewhere in the country during a time when the town was having issues with "letters". It tells the story of the town people getting harassed and left feeling sad when letter go around about how terrible everyone is at everything, but they don't know who it is because it is anonymous. They must find out who is sending these letters to them. The character they must find who is sending the letters is a old lady names Mrs. Strangeworth hence the name strange. She is an old lady that lives on pleasant street who likes to believe that she owns this small town because her family has been there the longest. She is also into planting roses and a proper person, but on her free time she sends letters to random people in the town anonymously saying how bad they or just criticizing innocent people. So Mrs. Strongworth at first seems to be a very kind innocent old woman. Then she starts getting a little strange by being very over protective about her roses. After this she started to know a lot about people and what's going on in their life. Next se talks really proper and just looks like a perfectionist because while she was eating her dinner everything had to be just perfect. She finally has a desk that has a pad lock on it and that's where she writes her letter towards people. She also takes colored paper and letters and writes in sort of a childish way because since everyone thinks she's proper they won't think it's her writing the terrible letters towards people. As the story ends the towns people find out it was her writing those letters because once while she was delivering the letters to the post office she dropped one and someone picked it up and gave it to who she addressed it to. When the person read it he or she asked who was it from and the person said Mrs. Strangeworthso then the person who got the letter went over to the strangeworth house and killed all of the roses. They then gave the letter back to her and on the back said "look at what used to be your roses.
